give me a semi-reasonable limit on a checking account balance, to work with and a 454-496 cubic inch BIG BLOCK that fits under that hood could be built, the same basic way you built the SBC in your t-bucket, and still be a impressive daily transportation, match that to a well built 4L80E with full manual control and youll surprise a whole lot of people in the stop light grand prix with that car.the best part is that depending on the application, you may not need more than the stock block and perhaps the crank, and in some cases even reworked OEM heads, as the basic components you start with,certainly you can build an impressive power plant for similar or even less money starting with a 454 as the basic components and increased displacement do have advantages.
but a properly built big block with shread a stock 10 bolt rear differential eventually.
personally ID start looking at salvage yards for a pick-up or van with a rear differential that is about the same width, as the current differential, , a 9" ford or dana 60 rear that would fit that has disc rear brakes, but be aware the differential center-line and axle offset varies as well as width

Just playing at this point, TBucket is still my primary concern and money will be
going to it thru the winter.

With the above in mind what would it cost to build a stock 454 putting out 475-500 hp
at the crank. For this project the price for buying the motor to build would have to be
part of the budget.

What would the expected gas mileage be ...... below 15 mpg would hardly seem like a
daily driver. That's two gallons per day, if gas cost $3/gal or $6 per day, or $1500
per year. I drive 35 miles round trip to work.

Using round numbers.

$500 ..... Good stock bore 454, long block.

like every other build you decide on what your power goal is, and think about your budget limitations, consider what work you can do and what needs to be sent out to be done, and make a few logical compromises.
your local bargain trader or craigs list and occasional track swap meets can usually provide some components like intake manifolds cheaply.
youll certainly need to consider drive train,gearing, and trans type,tire diam and engine compression, head flow limitations, intake design, headers, exhaust system, cam timing and a dozen other areas where youll compromise.
and I would never even consider a cam with that limited duration, if the goal were decent power levels,
youll make logical choices to reach goals.

My goal was to get others involved with pricing and thinking. None of
the parts were meant to be a final decision but a way to get prices. Much
better than my guessing!!!

Just trying to see what a daily driver engine would cost for me to build.
Daily driver means 15 mpg minimum!!!

I mentioned earlier that I had owned a 1964 Chevelle as a teenager, well I found
my owners manual that I have saved all these years.

Hey Rick, so if you were 16 when you got your license and had that car, that would have been in like 69 or 70, dang, your even older than the owners manual! :D

If you don't mind, that would be wonderful. I need to buy a better carb for this
car, the A/F idle screw is out 4 turns to make the car idle. The cross bar for the
air cleaner is gone. You will notice a buggie cord in the pictures of the engine.
