got another shipment in today, a bottle of dykem that im gonna need for porting and this kit of engine brushes from moroso:

so as of right now ive got about 2800 dollars sunk into the whole project including the cost of the car .... i think theres probably 2k left to spend and then have someone fab up all the piping... depending on how fast i work i may be done soon

got a couple more tools in, a few packs of cartridge rolls, from eastwood and jegs, some metric thread chasers and a cool bottom end parts organizer tray similar to the valvetrain one ive got but obviously much bigger and shaped for a rotating assembly

Get that 4.8 LS Apart Phil down to the bare block ?
Only way to know what's needed and check cylinder bores for wear and crankshaft main, rod, & crank check thrust surfaces.
Dial bore guage measure & micrometer measure check all.
Pop all valves out and check the guides for wear and hard chrome valvestems.

I sonic cleaned most of the 1971 GTO 455 #2 this week at work Phil.
Both #66 heads.
The stock cast iron intake Q-jet that is actually a decent flowing dual plane.
Stock rockers and pushrods that have near zero wear.
All Factory fasteners sonic cleaned and orginized.
The stock oil pan and valvecovers.
The stock 3/4 length windage tray used on 455's.
1 of 4 factory full length windage trays used 1964-1970.
Fit 455's with spacer washers to clear front crank counter weights.

Have just the acessory brackets to sonic clean & factory timing cover & upper dipstick tube & oil dipstick come next Monday.

im torn between just slapping it together and building a serious high hp motor.. the gen 4 h beam factory rods are 400 and change... a set of pistons are 800 bucks, and for all that trouble i might pour some hard blok in there and strengthen it as much as i can so i can really take it to the moon and twist the shit out of this little datsun... on the other hand that money i really dont need to spend to reach my somewhat modest goals.

Spend only what you need to and can afford.

it just so happns that this little endeavor is in line with the next semester of school covering engine repair A1 of the ase general automotive competencies... so rather than rebuild some shitty old honda motor thats been shit on a hundred times, im bringing my own motor to school where ill have a somewhat more expansive set of tools to do my teardown (then take to the machine shop for work) and then assemble it back at school. i guess its gonna be an expensive semester. :lol:

just be aware theres at least a slight potential for any engine or component that's being worked on and/or left at a school ,to be intentionally screwed up, or stolen when you have any large group working on your engine in any environment that you can,t strictly control and limit access too,on any of those parts being worked on most of the time!
the reason I bring this up, is that I know of a past experience where one of my friends brought a set of very expensive donovan 417 cylinder heads into a trade school shop class, that was teaching the correct use of milling machines, and the accessories and how to precisely work on automotive repair work etc. too use as a teaching aid, too use as a demonstration tool, and have the the valve guides replaced, and the heads mysteriously "WALKED AWAY the second night they sat on a shelf in a locked room. the window too the room was busted the alarm was triggered, but the school claimed they were not responsible for private property left UN-attended, on their property and he never got the heads or compensation.
his intention was too save a bunch on the labor costs and learn from a very experienced instructor that had offered anyone in the class that would bring in any of the parts they had from any engine they owned, too have repair work done as the class progressed.
yeah! he should have carted the heads back and forth each day with him, but thought keeping them in a locked closet at the trade school would be safe!

yea plus theres security measures in place there but i agree totally grumpy, apart from people wanting to steal stuff to get over, to other people intentionally sabotaging the motor just because they're assholes that dont want people to have nice things... ive considered it all. i think i have a good enough reputation there that my stuff wont get messed with, but also theres some extra security precautions im taking

Junkyard scrap metal guys are Hurting Financialy Phil.
Just $70.00 payout per Ton on scrap iron & scrap steel.
Works out to $ .035 cents per pound.
Entire cars junked paying just .065-.095 cents per pound.

May be a time to get deals on some things cheap. $.
