63 Corvette flywheel choice

My brother in law recently had a 383 built for his 63 Corvette. The engine builder and myself assumed that a 168 tooth flywheel would be the choice. The guy putting the engine in the car said the flywheel wouldn't fit in the bell housing. He recommended that a 153 tooth flywheel be used. I wondered why not use a scattershield & keep the 168 tooth setup which has already been balanced. He decided to go with a 153 tooth setup. I said, "whatever", but I thought I'd get your opinion.
